Most Christians consider Christ’s saving work of men the primary reason for the His work of redemption in all its facets, but Jonathan Edwards impresses upon us that it is by the work of redemption that God decreed to accomplish, above all things, the glorifying of Himself. We are utterly indebted to grace for the power of God to convert us, grant us faith in His Son, and to wrought in us the new nature. As Lazarus required the resurrecting power of Christ to bring him forth from the grave, so do we— dead in trespasses and sins, need the Spirit’s power to make us alive to God. By understanding our complete dependence upon God can we best appreciate that no man can glory in anything pertaining to man but if we glory in anything— let us glory in the Lord!
